Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital

The Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital (hereinafter referred to as "PLA General Hospital"), located at No. 28, Fuxing Road, Wanshoulu Subdistrict, in the southern part of Haidian District, Beijing, is a large-scale modern comprehensive hospital that integrates medical treatment, healthcare, teaching, scientific research, prevention, rehabilitation, nuclear, biological, and chemical protection, and medical rescue. It is striving towards becoming a world-class military hospital.




The predecessor of the hospital was a hospital directly under the Central Military Commission, with its red bloodline tracing back to the August 1 Nanchang Uprising in 1927. It grew and developed amidst the founding and development of the people's army, nurtured and matured through the trials of war. On August 5, 1953, under the kind guidance of founding fathers such as Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou, and Commander-in-Chief Zhu, the hospital was officially established. On August 4, 1954, it was renamed the People's Liberation Army No. 301 Hospital. On June 6, 1957, it was renamed the People's Liberation Army General Hospital. On November 4, 1958, the Military Medical Training College was established (renamed the People's Liberation Army Medical College in April 2012), marking the beginning of hospital education.








The hospital boasts 21 clinical medical departments, 8 national key disciplines, 3 military "dual" disciplines, 5 national clinical medical research centers, 7 national key experimental platforms represented by the State Key Laboratory of Kidney Diseases, 46 provincial and ministerial level as well as military-wide key laboratories, and 61 military-wide medical research institutes and specialized centers.




The hospital holds leading advantages in various fields, including research on geriatric disease prevention and early warning intervention systems, clinical and basic research on deafness, series of research on new technologies for respiratory infection and respiratory failure support, research and treatment in burn and plastic surgery, tissue engineering treatment of bone and joint cartilage, research and treatment of kidney diseases, precision surgical treatment of hepatobiliary diseases, research and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the elderly, research on wound repair and tissue regeneration, integrated treatment and basic research of tumors, minimally invasive robotic surgery, digestive endoscopic treatment, interventional minimally invasive treatment, treatment of complex ocular trauma and diagnosis and treatment of difficult lacrimal diseases, infectious diseases and secondary diseases, difficult and severe liver diseases, diagnosis and treatment of hematological diseases, poisoning treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, diagnosis and treatment of special diseases in aviation and diving, neonatal treatment, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, organ transplantation, traditional Chinese medicine, and 5G remote surgery.




The hospital, also known as the People's Liberation Army Medical College, is the only hospital-run educational institution in the entire military. It undertakes the tasks of doctoral and master's degree education and high-level talent training for the military, as entrusted by the state and the army. It offers 5 first-level disciplines and 20 second-level disciplines for doctoral degrees, covering 47 specialties; and 7 first-level disciplines and 23 second-level disciplines for master's degrees, covering 50 specialties.




The hospital has won 9 first prizes and 32 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 second prizes of the National Technology Invention Award, 37 first prizes of the Military Science and Technology Progress Award, and 24 first prizes of the Military Medical Achievements Award.




The hospital boasts nearly 60,000 sets of high-precision medical equipment, including the world-leading fifth-generation CyberKnife, Da Vinci surgical robot, digital angiography machine, cyclotron, the world's second ZAP accelerator, computed tomography treatment system, hyperbaric oxygen chamber, magnetic navigation intervention system, intraoperative CT, intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging, PET-CT, PET-MR, intraoperative radiotherapy system, and cobalt-60 therapy machine, with a total value of nearly 7 billion yuan.




The hospital has taken the lead, spearheaded, and shouldered the heavy responsibility in rescuing major disasters such as the Tangshan, Wenchuan, Yushu, and Ya'an earthquakes, as well as the Tianjin Port explosion, and in providing medical support for major events such as the Beijing Olympics, the China-Africa Forum, the Wuhan Military World Games, and the military parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It has also been at the forefront of fighting against SARS, Ebola, and COVID-19, as well as providing medical assistance to foreign countries. The hospital has excelled in completing all these tasks.




The hospital takes the lead in implementing the "Healthy China" strategy, leveraging its talent and technological advantages, and actively participating in poverty alleviation efforts. It has partnered with dozens of hospitals in remote and impoverished areas to provide targeted health assistance in Tibet, specifically treating tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, rheumatic diseases (osteoarthritis), hydatidosis, and Kashin-Beck disease. It also provides charitable assistance to patients with cataracts, congenital heart disease, and deafness, benefiting hundreds of millions of people.




The hospital has been awarded titles such as "International Model Baby-Friendly Hospital", "National People's Trustworthy Demonstration Hospital", and "Advanced Hospital in Serving the Troops". A large number of industry pioneers and advanced models have emerged. Three collectives and 19 individuals have been awarded honorary titles, three collectives and 18 individuals have been honored with first-class merit, and seven people have been awarded the Nightingale Medal.
