Beijing Hospital-Zhang Shuyang

The President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, concurrently serving as the Vice President and a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, is a Chief Physician, Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Distinguished Professor of Tsinghua University, Clinical PI of the Joint Center for Life Sciences, and Director of the Cardiology Center. He/She currently holds the position of a representative to the 14th National People's Congress and a member of the 13th Executive Committee of the All-China Women's Federation.


In 1986, he graduated with excellent grades from the Department of Clinical Medicine at Beijing Medical University. After graduation, he was recommended to pursue a PhD at Peking Union Medical College. He studied under renowned cardiovascular disease experts Professor Fang Qi and Professor Jin Lan at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. In 1991, he obtained a PhD in Clinical Medicine and stayed on to work at the hospital after graduation. Since 1986, he has undergone rigorous and standardized training in internal medicine and cardiology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, serving successively as a resident physician, chief resident physician, attending physician, and associate chief physician. In 2004, he was promoted to chief physician and professor.


From 1995 to 1999, he conducted postdoctoral research in cardiology in the United States and was evaluated by his American supervisor, the internationally renowned interventional cardiologist Dr. Ramee, as "one of the most promising cardiologists of the future." Upon returning to China, he served successively as deputy director of the cardiology department, director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory, and director of the Clinical Pharmacology Research Center. In 2011, he became vice president of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Since 2015, he has concurrently served as vice president of Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2019, he became secretary of the Party Committee of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Since 2020, he has served as president and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. He has been awarded the title of "Outstanding Young Expert with Outstanding Contributions" by the National Health Commission, the "Special Government Allowance Expert" by the State Council, the "National May 1st Labor Medal," the "National March 8th Red Flag Pacesetter," the "National Exemplary Individual in Fighting COVID-19," the "Excellent Hospital President and Outstanding Contribution Award" by the Chinese Hospital Association, the "Excellent Style of Famous Doctors in China" and "Outstanding Achievement Award" by the Chinese Medical Association, the "Top Ten Health Guardians in Capital," and the "Medical Ethics Pacesetter in Beijing." From 2019 to 2023, he was rated as excellent in the annual assessment of cadres managed by units directly affiliated with the National Health Commission for five consecutive years. He led his team to win the "National Advanced Collective of Professional and Technical Talents," the "Second Batch of National Huang Danian-style Teacher Team Award," and the "National Teaching Achievement Award First Prize.".


Having worked tirelessly on the frontline of medical education and research for many years, especially in the areas of enhancing the diagnosis, treatment, research, and management of rare diseases, he has accomplished a wealth of pioneering, fundamental, systematic, and leading work. This has filled numerous gaps in the definition of rare diseases, basic data, collaborative diagnosis and treatment, research platforms, discipline construction, policy transformation, and more. He has been evaluated as a "pioneer of the Chinese approach to rare diseases" by the Lancet China Special Issue. He has presided over 16 national and provincial scientific research projects, including key research and development plans during the 13th Five-Year Plan and the 14th Five-Year Plan periods of the Ministry of Science and Technology. He has led 23 international and domestic clinical multi-center trials. As the first or corresponding author, he has published over 300 SCI papers in prestigious journals such as NEJM, Science, Lancet, and Nature, with a total of 7,550 citations. He has edited 11 textbooks and monographs on rare diseases, and presided over the development of the "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Rare Diseases (2019 Edition, 2024 Edition)" and nine disease-specific guidelines issued by the National Health Commission. He founded the journal "Rare Disease Research", which completed its initial launch and was selected into the prestigious "Chinese Science and Technology Core Journals" camp in just two years, becoming one of the fastest-included core journals.
